Who is manche masemola
German and then English missionaries had worked in the Transvaal for several decades and by the early twentieth century there was a Pedi Christian minority which was widely viewed with distrust by the remainder of the tribe who still practiced the traditional tribal religion.
She attended classes in preparation for baptism with her cousin Lucia, against the wishes of her parents. When she came home she would be beaten by her parents. Manche found herself saying that she would be baptized in her own blood. Her parents took her to a spirit priest, claiming that she had been bewitched. She was prescribed a traditional remedy, which her parents made her consume by beating her. She died shortly after without having been baptized. The real causes of tension in the family and the fears that caused the violence were never clearly spelled out.
As some point Manche told Lucia that she would obey her parents and work to the best of her ability but that she would not turn away from the Church. The medicine from the traditional doctor that was forced on her did not turn her away from Christianity. Upon touching the hoe, Manche was infected and died. A small group of people participated in the pilgrimage to her grave after a few years.
Manche was given an official feast day in the Anglican calendar of saints in the year Statues of ten Christian martyrs were put above the west door of Westminster Abbey in Among them was that of Manche Masemola. Many Western missionaries to Africa colluded with the colonizers in the act of civilizing heathens and savages, imposing western norms and values as normative in the contexts of their missions.
Even though they did this in the name of God, it did not do justice to the cause of Christian missions.
It is essential that those who are committed to the cause of missions appreciate and respect both the people and the cultures they wish to reach through their missionary work. If the early missionaries had acted this way, perhaps the Sekhukhuneland Pedi people would not have viewed them with such suspicion, and perhaps the tragedy which befell Manche would have been averted.
In the tradition of African hospitality and the spirit of ubuntu humanness and kindness , visitors are highly respected in African cultures, especially those whose cause is genuine. A pertinent question in this regard would be: If the missionary genuinely feels called by God to conduct missions within a specific location only to be confronted by the wrath and rejection of the host, what would be a reasonable way out of the situation?
Which role may parents play regarding the holistic nurturing of their children in the preceding scenario? Particularly parents who are persuaded that God should be involved in the lives of all people, including the youth, would they be willing to acknowledge the agency of younger ones like Manche, the martyr? But we can take her life history seriously, even in the circumscribed form in which we have it. Though illiterate, she was capable of making decisions, she had resources for survival and resistance, an inviolable sense of self.

Jul 24, Rating manche's story by: mosehle austin As a member of the anglican church of ga marishane I heard the story when I was still young but did not inquire more.
Manche's mother,Masegadike used to visit my mother frequently because they shared the same name. I am 69 years old and regret why I did not ask my late mother the truth about Saint Manche Masemola. I hope more light will be shared by those who know what truly happened. What I have is the mental picture of the short, wrinkled, light complexion, tiny body of Masegadike who used to visit us at Maweseleng at GaMarishane.
Its amazing how she handled things, never lost hope even if she was beaten everytime she went to church. I just wish people could have hope like she did.
Mar 04, Rating : by: Anonymous I love this story, but it would be cool to tell it from multiple perspectives. Jan 15, Rating manche story by: Anonymous Rev Vuyisile Sonti The story of Manche is exciting as I read the comments and the story itself I believe its time to make a film or a stage play that would bring the whole story to the public.
I am sure that we all understand that even the story of our Lord Jesus has different versions but none the less the story is told. Please confirm the fact that she is a Saint? Should a parish remember her, would it be correct to use red colour in that service The Anglican church should take the responsibility to research more on this martyr and follow up some of the comments made as the comments made have an impact to the churches understanding of the story and its teaching.
Though Manche has gone through lot of assault by her mother, Masegadike, she did not die that way. The truth is, her mother prevented her and her sister, Mabule, one Saturday to go to church the following sunday, they were helping their mother to cultivate in the field. Their mother told them that she was far behind schedule and they must help her that sunday to catch up with cultivation in stead of going to church.
The two girls were not in favour of that, but did not tell their mother.
